Message from Executive Director
Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) is home to 12 ethnic communities and distinct from other parts of the country due to its hilly geographic and socioeconomic conditions. The area covers one tenth of the total area of the country with 1.5 million populations, but one of the deprived regions in the country in all development indicators. ALO, which means ‘Light’, in Bangla language, emerged in CHT to alleviate poverty, diversify livelihood opportunities and empower poor communities. ALO is a pioneer development and a people centered organization in CHT working at Khagrachari Hill District since 1999 and gradually expanding its development activities other parts of the country.
Since establishment, ALO has created an enabling environment for the underprivileged people through interventions of different development initiatives which includes food security, agriculture, education, health, water and sanitation, environment protection, and emergency and disaster risk reduction, financial access to small scale entrepreneurs/poor, good governance, human and women rights, access to market and value chains and so on.
This year ALO marked on 21 years of development journey in the most inaccessible and vulnerable areas within 3 hill districts (Bandarban, Khagrachari and Rangamati). There are still many places in the Chittagong Hill Tracts where development activities have not reached and have opportunity to work larger scale development activities. ALO intends to cover all those un-serve and under-development areas for the well-being of the community and contribute to establish a hunger free society.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all our communities, stakeholders in particular government institutions, development partners/donors for their cooperation, support and active participation in the interventions of ALO. The ALO would not have been able to achieve its goal without their spontaneous support. I do hope development partners; government and non-government stakeholders will come forward to achieve the ALO objectives, vision and mission as well as contribute to national plans, strategy and goals.
